The elephant is not only the master of the forest but also helps to balance the ecology of the forest. It is a symbol in Buddhism and is held in high regard by practitioners of Buddhism. In order to allow more people the opportunity to see and enjoy these wonderful animals, the Shanghai zoo introduced 6 elephants from Yun Nan province in 2002.These elephants were trained in Yun Nan by experienced Thai trainers prior to their arrival in Shanghai. The elephants now perform at the zoo. They perform the three-legged race, walk the balance beam, play soccer, do trunk dunks, give massages with their giant feet and put their trainers in their mouths. Altogether they perform 12 tricks. Obviously there is a large amount of mutual trust involved in these performances and from this we can see that elephants are truly friends of mankind. |
